Abdomen. The most posterior tagma of the body. Acute. Forming an angle less than 90°. Adedeagus. The distal portion of the phallus. Anal. Relating to the last abdominal segment or to characters found at the posterior basal area of a structure( ie. the anal vein of the wings). Antenna. Paired sensory organs on the head. Carina. A ridge. Cerci. Paired appendages found on the tenth abdominal segment. Clubbed. Having the distal segments enlarged. Distal. The end of an appendage farthest from the body. Fastigium. The anterior dorsal surface of the head. Ensiform. Larger at the base and narrowing distally. (typically pertaining to the antenna) Filiform. Thread-like, being the same size throughout. (typically pertaining to the antenna) Femur. Third segment of the leg following the coxa and trochanter. Furcula. Posterior facing projections found on top of (if present) the supra-anal plate. Herbivorous. Plant feeding. Nymph. An immature stage of Hemimetabola in which pupal stage is absent; some authors now use the term "larva" for the immature stages of the Hemimetabola. Ocelli. A simple eye. Ovipositor. The genitalic structures used to deposit the eggs. Found at the end of the abdomen in most female Orthoptera. Pronotum. The dorsal surface or sclerite of the prothorax. Pronatal carina. The main or median carina on the pronotum Prosternum. The sclerite between the forelegs./ Pertaining to the area between the forelegs. Stridulatory pegs. small peg-like structures found on the inside of the hind femur. Used for sound production. Subgenital plate. The plate covering the genital structures. Supra-anal plate. The sclerite above the anal cavity. Typically triangular in nature. Suture. A line or depression in the exoskeleton, usually indicating distinct body parts. Tarsus. The distal segment of the tibia. Tegmen. The thickened forewing. Thorax. The second body tagma bearing the legs and wings. Tibia. The fourth segment of the leg. The color of the hind tibia is often useful in species determinations in the Acridiadae. Tympanum. The auditory membrane. On the first abdominal segment of Caelifera (Acrididae) or on the tibia of Ensifera (Tettigoniidae, Gryllidae, ect). |
